USE OF BIG DATA GENERATED IN ASSESSMENT SYSTEMS IN NIGERIAN SCHOOLS

The assessment systems in Nigeria have produced large volumes of data at different times of every year. These volumes of data constitute BIG DATA, by its definition and characteristics. At different levels of education in Nigeria – from pre-primary level, through Basic Education level, through Senior Secondary education level, and onto tertiary level, large volumes of data are collected through the processes of assessment. At pre-primary level, assessment and demographic data are periodically assembled through mid-terminal and terminal assessment exercises, and used as feedback data to improve teaching-learning processes and as foundational bases for Basic Education. At Basic Education level, apart from demographic and assessment data collected through mid-term and end-of-term assessment exercises, large volumes of data are generated through the standardized Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in different subjects. These assessment results are used for certification, selection and placement into Senior Secondary School programmes. The mid-term and end-of-term assessments at the Senior Secondary School level, coupled with the end-of-school standardized Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) results in different subjects of choice produce large volumes of Big Data that are used for selection and certification primarily. These assessment processes and exercises are deployed for purposes of assessment of learning and assessment for learning, although the former is dominating and enduring. This Paper focuses on the concept of big data in educational assessment, sources, nature and primary uses of big data in Nigeria’s educational system, possible alternative uses of Big Data generated in Nigeria’s educational system, and challenges militating against the use of Big Data in Nigeria’s educational system. It was recommended that, educational system in Nigeria should embrace the issue of big data as a concept that has many advantages.
