Technology and Writing Assessment: Lessons Learned from the

In this paper, I review the results of two research studies conducted for the US National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The studies concern doing writing assessment on computer. The first study examined the comparability of computer and paper tests of writing. Among other things, this study looked at differences in performance between nationally representative groups taking the same writing test in those two delivery modes. The second study examined the meaningfulness of scoring student responses automatically, including the degree to which writing experts and automated routines agreed in weighting the various components of student writing to create test scores.
