A Look at Indigenizing Assessment

,This paper follows the evolution of the Diversity Assessment Rubric at the University of Hawai‘,i at Hilo.By describing the difficult process of negotiating competing perspectives—,one promoting universal ,multiculturalism, the other maintaining native cultural sovereignty, the authors highlight the challenges ,facing educators in not only teaching “,diversity”, but also assessing faculty and student success learning ,and teaching of this concept in an environment that has an indigenous past and vibrant present along with ,a history of multi-ethnic settlement. The authors contend that bridging the two requires integration of ,both into an “,assessment”, tool that serves more as a facilitator of complex interaction as opposed to ,simply generating data for accountability. ,
